Despite Occidental colonialist influence (particularly missionary activity) starting in the 1500s and kicking off in the 1800s, the myths and cultures of the South Seas live on.

Micronesia
Mariana Islands, Marshall Islands, Caroline Islands, Gilbert Islands

The Caroline Islands include the countries of Palau and the F.S. of Micronesia.
The Gilbert Islands are the main portion of the country of Kiribati.

Melanesia
Papua New Guinea and the islands near it

Cannibalism occurs in myths throughout the South Pacific.
In these myths, people who eat people appear as monsters or enemies the hero must defeat or escape.
In the myth of To Kabinana and To Karvuvu, cannibalism originated from the idiotic moon god.

Based on these myths, I conclude that Pacific Islanders consider cannibalism an abomination (then, now, and never more), just like most other cultures on Earth.

For all I know, Captain Cook and other European explorers observed some South Pacific Jeffrey Dahmer.

Polynesia

Moana is the traditional Polynesian name for Oceania.

That means a certain Disney princess is literally named Oceania!

Today, several islands of the South Pacific are still territories of quote-unquote "Western" countries...but not forever.

Sometime in the future, all of Oceania will be fully independent.
Hawaii will be a country, and it will no longer be a misconception.
Guam and American Samoa will stop being territories of the U.S.A., and the latter will rejoin Samoa.
French Polynesia will be independent of France.
The Cook Islands will cut of ties with New Zealand.
Rapa Nui (Easter Island) will become independent from Chile.
